El Comité Mundial de Libertad de Prensa (WPFC, en sus siglas en inglés) ha remitido una carta al presidente de la Generalitat de Cataluña, Pasqual Maragall, y al del Parlament, Ernest Benach, en la que exige el desmantelamiento del Consejo Audiovisual de Cataluña (CAC) por vulnerar la libertad de información, según publica EL MUNDO.
En la misiva, E. Markham Bench, director ejecutivo del Comité, que engloba a 45 grupos pro libertad de prensa de todo el mundo, expresa su "consternación" por el contenido del informe que el CAC hizo público el pasado miércoles en el que acusó a la cadena Cope de vulnerar la Constitución y de sobrepasar "los límites de la libertad de expresión" al atentar contra el derecho al honor de algunos representantes políticos catalanes.
Según el WPFC, el CAC utiliza "un mandato arbitrario para intentar censurar y silenciar las opiniones de toda una red radiofónica". El Comité opina que se trata de "un órgano censor establecido por el Parlamento de Cataluña para detectar 'informaciones inveraces'" y recuerda que recomendó que se revocara la licencia de la Cope por incumplir "el requisito constitucional de la veracidad".
El rechazo del Comité hacia el CAC es frontal y lo equipara con los órganos de control de la libertad de prensa durante la dictadura de Franco. "No se recuerda en España algo parecido desde los órganos censores franquistas", asegura.
Además, el WPFC considera "injustificable que un órgano estatal sea el árbitro del comportamiento de un medio de comunicación".
Por ello, insta al Parlament y a la Generalitat a "tomar las medidas oportunas para desmantelar cuanto antes el CAC, adhiriéndose a las normas internacionales de libertad de expresión y prensa".
